ULIMPIA
A pathfinder project
The SonoSkin project builds on the highly successful PENTA ULIMPIA project that was finished in 2021. In the ULIMPIA project, the world’s first MEMS-based wearable wireless scanning ultrasound device was demonstrated. The ultrasound patch used a 64 elements CMUT transducer and employed active beam steering.
The CMUT transducer was driven by a specially designed ASIC that can be programmed to transmit an ultrasound “beam” at a certain angle and focus and receive the reflected signal. The received data can then be read out by a microcontroller at low speed. Wireless connectivity is provided via Bluetooth. In SonoSkin the integration level and functionality will be increased with a newly designed front-end ASIC allowing for Doppler-flow measurement, a modular device concept in a realistic form factor, and multi-sensor fusion.
